When I think about black history, I initially think about Africa, the cradle of black people, but I also think about the black people who currently live in other lands now, like here in the USA. In my opinion, Black History Month is about all black people. Here is a list of the Black History picture books in my own library. I’ll tell you a bit about each of these books:
Anansi
This is one of McDermott’s books of myth. It tells the story of Anansi, one of Africa’s mythological characters, similar to America’s Brer Rabbit.
Duke Ellington – A Picture Book Biography about a Great Jazz Legend
We All Went on Safari: A Counting Journey through Tanzania by Laurie Krebs art by Julia Cairns
Working Cotton – Picture Book by Sherley Anne Williams – Illustrated by Carole Byard
