Sun Sugar Cherry Tomato A Sweet Treat & The Earliest to Produce in My Garden

Last year was my first experience with growing Sun Sugar Cherry Tomatoes. I bought this variety to co-star in my Children’s Garden, The other star is my Heavenly Blue Morning Glories which perform mightily in October:

In Mississippi, my my blue morning glories bloom in October, which is an otherwise orange time of year. Keep in mind that blue and orange are complementary colors–the colors accentuate each other. Although I have grown Heavenly Blue Morning Glories for years, I did not add the Sun Sugar tomatoes until last year — when I noted that the Better Homes and Gardens Children’s Garden called for a similar orange cherry tomato:

I keep a garden journal, and last year I noted that my Sun Sugar Tomatoes were the First of My Tomatoes to Produce:

“Although called yellow cherry, these little tomatoes are orange at their peak, making almost more bite-sized bursts of sweetness than you can imagine on each plant. A single healthy plant is capable of producing hundreds. Several years ago, Sun Sugar was named by Sunset magazine as the best-tasting tomato in their trials for its sweetness and rich tomato flavor that includes just the right amount of tartness. This disease-resistant plant is one of our very best cherry tomatoes and are easy to grow. The fruits are fantastic for salads or to just set out in bowls for snacking. Give the vines plenty of room; they can get 7 feet long or more and will bear through heat until frost, so give them a tall l cage for support. Plants are resistant to fusarium wilt and tomato mosaic virus.” Bonnie Plants

Half an ounce of SunSugar tomatoes contains three times more vitamin A than most other red tomatoes.

SunSugar tomatoes are ready to harvest in early summer. For the best taste, pick the fruit when it’s at its peak ripeness and has no green or orange color left.
  • Growth
SunSugar tomatoes are vigorous growers that produce heavy yields of fruit that grow in clusters.
  • Skin
SunSugar tomatoes have thin skin and are less likely to crack than other varieties.
Taste

SunSugar tomatoes have a tangy “true tomato” taste and an extraordinary sugar-sweet flavor.

Today, as I repotted my Sun Gold Tomatoes for this year’s garden, I was surprised to see that one of my started plants is already blooming, and it is only early February.
