Tips for Growing Vegetables in Containers

Jacki Kellum Garden – Raised Bed

I garden in raised beds. In a way, my entire garden is a huge container. But for purposes of variety and to create height in places, I also grow some of my outside garden plants in containers.

I almost always grow my herbs in containers, and because lavender is fussy, and needs a specially prepared bed, I normally grow it in containers, too.

This year, however, I’ll also try growing a few vegetables in containers. As usual, I’ll rely on advice from my gardening group to help me do that correctly.

“…consider putting 1-3 upside down pots in the bottoms to take up space and save soil costs. i prefer a blend of good quality potting soil (miracle gro, etc.) mixed about two parts with one part bark mulch and one part real garden dirt to firm it up and hold nutrients better. a little compost OR manure will add “life” to the soil, helping plants grow better. and mulch the surface with bark after planting to keep it moist instead of wicking dry in the summer sun. ” John Rushing.
