Art Supplies List for 21 Days – Jacki Kellum Drawing Challenge

On Day 1 of the 21 Days Drawing Challenge, I shared one of Mark Kistler’s Drawing Tutorials: Draw & Shade A Sphere. [Link to the Lesson at the bottom of the page]

In that tutorial, Mark suggested several art materials for drawing. That list follows.

[All of these supplies are available on Amazon]

Pentel Mechanical Pencil P 209 HB Lead

When you need lead refills, buy

Pentel® Super Hi-Polymer® Leads, 0.9 mm, HB, 30 Leads Per Tube, Pack of 3 Tubes

When you need eraser refills, buy

Pentel® Eraser Refills for Mechanical Pencils, White, Pack of 12

Clic Eraser – I like Pentel White Clic Erasers

Drawing Stump:

I recommend this kit. It has several stumps of several sizes + a bag, and the price is not much higher than one single stump. By the end of 21 days, students will need more than 1 stump, and the small stumps are great for getting into tight spaces.

AGPTEK 22 PCS Sketch Drawing Tools, 16 Blending Stumps Set with 2 Sandpaper Pencil Sharpeners, 1 Pencil Extension Tool, 2 Erasers & 1 Felt Bag for Student Sketch Drawing Accessories

Strathmore 455-3, 400 Series Sketch Pad, 9″x12″ Wire Bound, 100 Sheets, White

Mark recommends that the students buy a sketchbook, but in my opinion, cheap computer paper is good enough for the first few days. Older students and adults might want to spring for a spiral sketchbook, but that is not necessary. BUT – when you do buy a sketchbook, be sure that you buy a trusted brand, like Strathmore.

Also, do not buy a sketchbook smaller than 9″x12.” I normally recommend that students buy 11″ x 14″ sketchbooks. Again, cheap computer paper is ok for several days.

Mark mentions a draftsman’s brush. This is not necessary for students. If someone gets serious about drawing, a dusting brush might be nice later. I have a brush now, but I didn’t have one for many years.

Jacki Kellum Drawing Supplies

Disclaimer — I NEVER use mechanical pencils. Period. But I don’t draw like Mark Kistler. I say that, but I must add that it has taken years of LEARNING for me to reach the point that I can draw the way I do now. Mark Kistler’s drawing program is a good way for you to get from zero to hero. For the more advanced part of the course, I recommend the following supplies.

Ticonderoga Pencils Number 2. Don’t get the colorful Ticonderogas with colorful erasers. Those erasers don’t work well. Just buy regular school pencils, but get the Ticonderoga brand–the pencils are yellow. You can buy them on Amazon, Dollar General, WalMart — EVERYWHERE.

But if you use these pencils, you will also need a pencil sharpener.

Staedtler Mars Plastic Erasers — ONLY this brand. Only white erasers. You can buy them on Amazon.

Pentel White Eraser Caps — Only White. This is to replace your pencil eraser, which you will quickly destroy.
