All About Using a Heating Mat to Start Garden Seeds Inside

One of the benefits of renting a studio/gallery space that houses much of my art stuff and furniture, is that I now have much more space in my home for doing other things — like gardening. Plus, now that I have a multi-functional sales space in the historic part of my town, I also have a place to sell things–like the goods from my garden.

Years ago, I started a website at cottagegardenliving.com. One of my long-range goals has been that of launching a small garden business, and this is the year that I hope to make that dream come true.

During this past week, I have undertaken a massive tomato-repotting effort.  Now, it is time to focus my energy on starting my own seeds inside.

I plan to sell garden plants and garden produce, this spring. In order to achieve that goal, I have purchased some heating mats that will make seed germination more reliable. In this post, I will share what I know about plant heating mats.

VIVOSUN 10″x 20.75″ Seedling Heat Mat and Digital Thermostat Comb

Last year, i bought some heating mats, but they did not have the thermostat, and therefore, I never mastered the art of controlling their temperatures, and temperature control is vital for proper seed germination.

It is important to note that the temperature that is of important is that of the soil. For that reason. I have also ordered the following  Reotemp soil thermometer:

I have established a fairly impressive system of shelves and grow lights. In another week or two, I’ll let the Seed Germination Game Begin.

Note: To Maintain the Proper Soil Temperature, you must keep the pads heating day and night, until germination has completed.
