I have begun watching House of David, which is a powerful Biblical dramatic series on Amazon Prime, and I have decided to use this series as the backdrop of an in depth Bible study of the life and legacy of David’
The first episode is titled: Shepherd and a King.”
David is one of the most important people in the Old Testament. There is something powerful about the fact that David was the shepherd boy who saved his people from the ravages of the giant Goliath.

David was also a shepherd boy who became a King.

Baby Jesus was a descendent of David, the Shepherd Boy. The image of the shepherd is important. Jesus is called a shepherd. Like David protected and watched his sheep, Jesus is the shepherd of his people.
The Lord Is My Shepherd
23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Psalm 23
THE SHEEP in the Bible
“Importance of Sheep in the Bible—The Sheep the chief wealth of the pastoral tribes—Arab shepherds of the present day—Wanderings of the flocks in search of food—Value of the wells—How the Sheep are watered—The shepherd usually a part owner of the flocks—Structure of the sheepfolds—The rock caverns of Palestine—David’s adventure with Saul—Use of the dogs—The broad-tailed Sheep, and its peculiarities. . . .
“There is, perhaps, no animal which occupies a larger space in the Scriptures than the Sheep. Whether in religious, civil, or[177] domestic life, we find that the Sheep is bound up with the Jewish nation in a way that would seem almost incomprehensible, did we not recall the light which the New Testament throws upon the Old, and the many allusions to the coming Messiah under the figure of the Lamb that taketh away the sins of the world.
Baby Jesus was born in Bethlehem: the City of David. The Christmas Story is inextricably linked to the life and legacy of David.
The story of Episode 1 of The House of David begins in Bethlehem with the Tribe of Judah.
-
- Micah 5:2: “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel…”
Mary and Joseph returned to Bethlehem to be taxed and during that time, Baby Jesus was born:

Before David became the King Saul was the first King of the Israelites.
Episode 1 of House of David takes place in Israel — one thousand years before Christ This time is about 500 years after Moses
Episode 1 of House of David takes place in Israel — one thousand years before Christ This time is about 500 years after Moses parted the sea and led his people out of slavery in Egypt,
Episode begins with a flash forward, and the viewer glimpses David, as he battles the giant Goliath, The series will return to this battle later, but the first episode begins before that time, with Samuel, the great prophet who chose Saul to be the first King of the Israelites. Prior to that time, there had been no Israelite Kings.

Samuel was the last of the great Judges, and in the book of Judges, a reference is made to the fact that prior to Saul, Israel had no Kings.
25 In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit. Judges 21:25
But the Israelites became restless and wayward [a repeated pattern] and grumbled that they wanted a king:
I Samuel 8:4-6
4 So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. 5 They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead[b] us, such as all the other nations have.”
6 But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. 8 As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”

As with any potent film, cinematography is vital. The creation and costuming of the characters is also crucial, and David in the film series is exactly as I would have perceived him. One of the most touching parts of the first episode is when David is playing his harp and singing Psalm 9 with his mother:
The Bible does not name the mother of David, but the Talmud calls David’s mother Nitzevet.
David’s father was Jesse.
- Boaz: Father of Obed.
- Obed: Father of Jesse.
- Jesse: Father of King David
“According to the Bible, Jesse was the son of Obed and the grandson of Ruth and of Boaz. He lived in Bethlehem, in Judah, and was of the Tribe of Judah, he was a farmer, breeder and owner of sheep. He was a prominent resident of the town of Bethlehem.[3] Jesse is important in Judaism because he was the father of the most famous King of Israel. He is important in Christianity, in part because he is in the Old Testament and mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus.” Wikipedia
During Advent, I celebrate the family tree of Jesus by creating a Jesse Tree:
The name Jesse is referenced in the Old Testament, and in particular the passages of the Book of Isaiah, Chapter 11, Verses 1–3:
1. And there shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. 2. And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. 3. And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear;[10]
