In the South, April Showers Bring April Flowers

In the South, April Showers Bring April Flowers.

As I’ve watched this allium mature and bloom in my garden–in the midst of this stand of bachelor buttons, I’ve been thinking about this expression all month. In essence, Thomas Tusser wrote “April Showers Bring May Flowers.”

“…sweet April showers, do spring May flowers”  – Thomas Tusser – Five Hundred Points of Good Husbandry

Since I was a child, I have echoed, the phrase: “April Showers Bring May Flowers,” but I live in the Southern part of the USA, and in the South, April Showers bring April Flowers. Thomas Tusser lived in England–during the 15th Century, and England has different weather than that in the South.

In England, flowers probably wait until May to begin opening their wintry eyes, but that phenomenon happens much earlier where I live–in Mississippi.

Although I have lived in the South almost all  my life, I lived in New Jersey for 18 years. New Jersey is North of Mississippi, but England is North of New Jersey.
