McCaskey Total Account System – 1914
Jacki Kellum Studios in Water Valley. MS, has acquired an old Mcaskey Cash Register and Receipt File from 1914. It is perfect for the Studio Space that housed the Hotel Trusty at about that same time.

Jacki Kellum Studios is at 32 South Main Street in Water Valley Mississippi — in the first floor of the space where the Hotel Trusty once thrived. The owners of the entire building at 32 South and Jacki Kellum are striving to retain some of the 1920s and 1930s spirit in their shared space,
32 South Main in Water Valley, Mississippi, is owned by the Thompson Family. Grant Thompson pipes period jazz music down on the studio’s passersby. The same music plays in the foyer –to greet people who enter Kellum’s Studios and Gallery.
I might add that this is a perfect time to get a new cash register. It is only 4 weeks until the annual Water Valley Art Crawl.

Facts about the McKaskey Total Account System
- Company & Origin: Founded in 1903 by Perry McCaskey in Alliance, Ohio. Wikipedia
- The Problem It Solved: General merchants needed a fast, reliable method to manage credit accounts and Writing” System: The core invention was a credit register cabinet that utilized custom-printed sales books. When a merchant filled out a receipt, duplicate or triplicate carbon copies were made simultaneously. Wikipedia
- The Receipt File / Safe Register: Instead of ledger books, the duplicates were immediately filed away in categorical, alphabetical, or numerical clips inside a protective desk-sized cabinet or safe register. By 1914, following a major factory fire in 1908, McCaskey heavily popularized insulated and fireproof metal safe registers to protect these active customer receipt accounts from burning. Wikipedia
- How It Kept a “Total Account”: Each time a customer made a new credit purchase, the merchant brought forward the customer’s previous total debt balance, added the new charges, and recorded a new final total directly onto the latest receipt. The latest receipt filed in the cabinet always displayed the customer’s total, up-to-the-minute account balance. Wikipedia
