When I was a child, I was surrounded for miles by cotton fields, cotton gins, and the dark, rich soil that the Mississippi River had deposited there in earlier years. Occasionally, you might see a narrow line of vegetation crossing the terrain, in a place like One Ditch. This sliver of water was called One Ditch to distinguish it from Two Ditch, Three Ditch, etc. These ditches were dug to catch the Mississippi River–should it flood again. I grew up in a Missouri Delta Town —Gideon, MO, which was the best place possible to be a child. Thank you to the wonderful people who have cradled my heart. I have settled in a small Mississippi town that reminds me of my home.
