Fashion Design Class & Drawing People for Middle Schoolers and Teens

While I was living in New Jersey, I taught a great group of girls a class in fashion design. The primary focus was to help these girls learn to draw and paint people. Another objective was that of teaching the facets of creative mixed media design, The third objective is to help students explore Fashion Design as a Career Path.

The fourth objective is to prepare students to create textile art.

The fifth objective is to prepare students for college art courses in Figure Drawing.

The sixth objective is to help students conquer their fear of drawing faces.

First, the students are taught how to draw faces according to guidelines,

Whether the face I am drawing is cartoon or more realistic, I always begin by lightly sketching the guidelines to help me place the eyes, nose, and mouth.

I have been drawing faces for half a century, and I still do not skip this step.

After I teach students to draw cartoon faces according to guidelines,  I allow them to progress to a study of Jane Davenport’s book: Drawing and Painting Beautiful Faces.

After studying faces, we study fabrics and fashion figures.

Fashion Illustration requires a myriad of skills.  Students are taught to draw fashion models, but they are also exposed to a wide sampling of fabrics.  Making choices of what works with what is an art, and I flood my students with fabrics and force them to make choices.
