Teach Me to Pray: A Collection of Prayers and Prayer-Like Words

Many years ago, I was impressed by the passage in Matthew where Jesus denounced hypocrisy in religion, and as I begin training to join the Order of the Daughters of the Queen, which is largely a formal prayer group, I have committed to learn how to pray honest, humble prayers and to avoid repeating shallow, flowery prayers meant to impress people around me.

In this spot, I’ll share some of the Collects, Scriptures, Prayers, and Prayer-Like Words to help me find my own prayer voice.

“Be Still and Know that I Am  God.” Psalm 46:10

Psalm 38:8 – I am utterly spent and crushed;
    I groan because of the tumult of my heart.

O Lord, all my longing is known to you;
    my sighing is not hidden from you.
10 My heart throbs, my strength fails me;
    as for the light of my eyes—it also has gone from me. ….

15 But it is for you, O Lord, that I wait;
    it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer. …

17 For I am ready to fall,
    and my pain is ever with me.
18 I confess my iniquity;
    I am sorry for my sin. …

21 Do not forsake me, O Lord;
    O my God, do not be far from me;
22 make haste to help me,
    O Lord, my salvation Psalm 38:8-22

Collect for Purity

“Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.” Book of Common Prayer

The Collect of the Day

God, whose blessed Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread:  Open the eyes of our faith, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Dame Julian of Norwich, C. 1417

Triune God, Father and Mother to us all, who showed your servant Julian revelations of your nurturing and sustaining love: Move our hearts, like hers, to seek you above all things, for in giving us yourself you give us all. Amen.

Jesus Denounces Scribes and Pharisees for Hypocrisy

23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, ‘The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat; therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practise what they teach. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear,[a] and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them. They do all their deeds to be seen by others…

25 ‘Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup,[f] so that the outside also may become clean.

27 ‘Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth. 28 So you also on the outside look righteous to others, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. Matthew 23: 1-5, 25-27
