Jimmy Carter’s Life Celebrated – Imagine the Day When Another President Will Serve with Honor and Grace

Yesterday, I watched Jimmy Carter’s funeral service, and I wept throughout it. But when Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood sang “Imagine,” the floodgates opened. “You may think that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one…”

I’m not certain why I cried throughout the service for Jimmy Carter, but I think that I wept because I have been forced to grapple with the fact that one of this nation’s lights has been forever extinguished.

“Imagine there’s no countriesIt isn’t hard to doNothing to kill or die forAnd no religion, too
Imagine all the peopleLivin’ life in peaceYou”

When I compare Jimmy Carter to Donald Trump, I am mortified:

“You may say I’m a dreamerBut I’m not the only oneI hope someday you’ll join usAnd the world will be as one

“Imagine no possessionsI wonder if you canNo need for greed or hungerA brotherhood of man.”

Imagine “A Brotherhood of Man”

I wept at Jimmy Carter’s funeral because while Trump Is President, I cannot imagine “A Brotherwood of Man.” For now, that political dream has died.

Imagine All the People Living As One

“Imagine all the peopleSharing all the worldYou
You may say I’m a dreamerBut I’m not the only oneI hope someday you’ll join usAnd the world will live as one”

While one person after another lauded the unblemished character of Jimmy Carter, the president-elect sat in the audience, awaiting his official sentencing as a convicted felon.  Although his sentencing was only a few hours away,  I doubt if Trump allowed himself to think about that paradox. Trump elects to reject his truth, but I dare say that people will not gather in a few years to discuss Trump’s fine character:

God Grant Us Grace–Amazing Grace

Imagine the Day When Another President Will Serve with Honor and Grace–or at Least Sing the Song:

Precious Memories, How They Linger – An Older Joan Baez Remembered When the President Sang Amazing Grace

I pray for the day when my president does more than monetize religion by selling Bibles imprinted with his name.
I grew up as a Southern Baptist, and I am proud that Jimmy Carter did more than give lip service to his Bible. In spite of the fact that his ratings plummeted, Jimmy Carter never shied away from living in alignment with the words he read in his Bible. I’ve said this before, but I cannot accept people who call themselves Christian and who simultaneously support Donald Trump. Donald Trump personifies everything I detest in mankind.  Again—-

I’m Trying to Imagine the Day When Another President Will Serve with Honor and Grace–or at Least Sing the Song.

You may say I’m a dreamerBut I’m not the only oneI hope someday you’ll join usAnd the world will live as one”
-John Lennon-
