For the next several lessons, you will be taught how to research several types of sources.

You will also be taught how to create citations for a variety of sources, and you will be taught how to create both a bibliography and an annotated bibliography.

The topic for the next weeks of study will be that of Greek Mythology.

Today, I’ll tell you how to Find Free Books to Read at gutenberg.org

Here’s how to access the Free gutenberg.org Library:

1. In Your Computer’s Search Window Type: gutenberg.org

2. Type your query into the search tab. Let’s try Mark Twain. Click Go!

Here’s the scoop on Gutenberg.org: It is a fabulous free library filled with many entire books that are out of copyright. No, you won’t find Nell Gaiman’s books there. You won’t find James Patterson’s books there. But you will find the entire contents of many of the oldies and goldies in books.

Search the database. Click on the title and enjoy!

You will find the copyright data–if the book has that.

You will find the illustrations–if the book has that.

You will find the entire text. You can copy and paste most of the text.

But Be Sure to Cite Your Quotation.

Even though the books are out of copyright, you must still use quotes with quoted material, and you must cite your source, when you use the quote in your writing. Otherwise, you will be guilty of plagiarism, and plagiarism is a prosecutable offense.

In this post, I’ll show you how to create a citation for a book that you might read on Gutenberg.org.

First Tip

If you read a book on gutenberg.org your citation will be created as a webpage–even though you are reading the book itself.

My college students will be researching Greek Mythology, which I believe is an invaluable study for any writer. Although many of the books on Gutenberg are outdated, much of the information there about Greek mythology is still fairly reliable.

In the gutenberg.org search window, search for the following book:

Type the title into the search window. Then, click the button with the word that says “Go!”

When you see the book’s title, click on that title.

From the options below, click the top one: “Read online (web)”Scroll to the Contents page, and click the hypertexted page 11. You can also continue to scroll to page 11.

Assignment: Read the section titled: Origin of the World – First Dynasty. Uranus and Gaea, pages 11 – 14.

Write the following sentences, and fill in the blanks:

1. In Greek mythology, the first two primal deities were _______________ and ___________________.
2. Uranus represented the light and air of _________________.
3. Gæa represented life-sustaining _______________________.
4. ________________ the heaven, was believed to have united himself in marriage with _______________the earth.

Uranus, Gaea, and the Titans were the First Dynasty. The First Dynasty ended when Cronus dethroned his father Uranus.

Assignment: Read the section titled Second Dynasty, Cronus, pgs. 15 – 17.

How to create a citation for a book in text [not online].

To create a citation for a book in print, you will need to know several bits of information that you will find inside the book.

First, you must know the complete title-

Treasury of Greek Mythology: Classic Stories of Gods, Goddesses, Heroes, & Monsters 

The author’s name – Donna Jo Napoli

You must also know the publisher and the date the book was published.
You will be able to find that information on the book’s copyright page

With this information, we can create a citation for this book.

Again, go to https://www.scribbr.com/citation/generator/

Enter the book’s full title. Then, Click the button with the word “Cite.” Click on the option “Books.”

When you see the book, click on the book itself. Scroll until you see the citation.
