How to Make an Easy Herbal Salve with Shea Butter and Essential Oils

Ingredients:
Shea Butter
Triple Paste
Bees Wax

There are probably more herbal salve recipes than there are essential oils, and I have discovered that there is an abundance of essential oils. I own most of them. Simply keeping my essential oil shelf organized is a challenge. With that in mind, I have created a different type of essential oil salve. Unlike other recipes, I do not extract my oils from my plants. Rather, I buy good quality essential oils. That is a huge time saver. Another difference in my salve is that  have included the healing power of zinc oxide in my salve.

I buy a product named Triple Paste, which is available at Amazon. Triple Paste is sold to treat Diaper Rash, and it contains Beeswax

Zinc Oxide can be used as a carrier oil for essential oils.

“Zinc oxide can be used as a carrier oil for essential oils. When combined with essential oils, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) can produce a stronger antimicrobial effect. The volatile compounds in the essential oils can stick to the surface of the nanoparticles, which can help the antimicrobial effect last longer.” Google ai

Zinc Oxide increases the healing capacity of essential oils.

Antimicrobial effect

“The combination of ZnO NPs and essential oils can produce a stronger antimicrobial effect. Some of the volatile compounds can remain on the nanoparticles’ surface, which can make the antimicrobial effect last longer.” Google ai

I have developed another recipe that uses the Zinc Oxide in Triple Paste:

How to Make an Easy Skin Cream with Essential Oils — No Waxy Mess — No Double Boiler — Just Measure & Stir

The skin cream that I make using the recipe mentioned above is light and relatively thin, It reminds me of my grandmother’s Pond’s Cold Cream, a prouct that was available at least by the 1950s, when I was a child.

I like the cream that I show you how to make in the above post, but I decided to go back to the drawing board and make a thicker, more salve-like product that would include the healing and thickening properties of African Shea Butter and Beeswax.

Spoon 1/2 cup of Triple Paste into a large measuring cup.
Add 1/2 cup of African Shea Butter

Mix these two products thoroughly. When you add the Essential Oil, the mixture will be soupy. To further thicken it, add 1/4 cup melted beeswax. Mix thoroughly again.

Add 1/3 Cup of Essential Oil

Note: I melt 1/4 cup pf beeswax in my microwave. It takes about 5 minutes for 1/4 cup of beeswax to melt in my  micrwave, but times may vary. Check on the progress several times. Do not heat more than necessary. The cup will be hot. Use a glove pot holder to remove the melted beeswax and to pour it into the mixture you have prepared.

Beeswax Has Several Healing Properties

  • Antibacterial: Beeswax has antibacterial agents that can help heal wounds and fight infection.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Beeswax can soothe irritated skin and help with conditions like rosacea and eczema.
  • Anti-allergenic: Beeswax can be suitable for sensitive skin.
  • Vitamin A: Beeswax contains vitamin A, which can help protect skin cells and regulate skin regeneration.
  • Humectant: Beeswax can draw and retain water, keeping skin hydrated.
  • Moisturizing: Beeswax can help keep skin firm and plump.
  • Protection from irritants: Beeswax can protect skin from environmental irritants and extreme weather.
  • Hair growth: Beeswax can moisturize and soothe hair, and keep natural moisture in.

“Early research suggests that applying a mixture of beeswax, olive oil, and alkanna to second-degree burns can speed up healing. Beeswax is often used in ointments and creams to treat skin conditions like psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, boils, and diaper rash.” Google ai

I Use Beeswax Pellets that I Buy on Amazon

I also buy Shea Butter on Amazon. The Butter is dark yellow, but when it is mixed with the white cream base and the beeswax the salve is lighter–more like the color of butter we serve on our tables.

The consistency of the Shea Butter I buy is thick–almost like the consistency of Play-Doh.

Which Essential Oils Should I Use in a Skin Cream?

I ALWAYS use a mixture of Eucalyptus Essential Oil and Peppermint Essential Oil in the Healing Salves I use every day. Both of thos oils are good for the skin, and their fragrances make me feel more alert.

When I go out, I might make a salve with Rose Essential Oil or Lavender Essential Oil. Those oils are also good for the skin.

Another salve that I create is made with Lemon Essential Oil, which is also good for the skin. Lemon Oil makes me feel fresh and clean.

You can try all of the essential oils I have named in the following set:

Hiqili Essential Oil Set of 16 – Great Way to Ease into the Essential Oil Experience

Try all of the oils in the above set. It won’t take long for you to decide which essential oils say “You!”
