A Complementary Color is any color lying directly across from another. On the above color wheel, complementary colors are connected by black lines.

When 2 complementary colors stand next to each other, they contrast and call attention to each other.

Red and Green are Complementary Colors. See how  those two colors work in my garden:

In most cases, I take great care to keep my complementary colors separated. I am a colorist, and the purity of my color is essential.

An exception to my rule is when I allow blues and oranges to mingle to create the brown centers of my Sunflowers and Black-eyed Susans.  I never use black paint. I create my blacks, browns, and grays by allowing complementary colors to mix in controlled spots.

The above color wheel does not represent all the colors on my color wheel. See how I use all the colors of my palette in my painting Bouquet in Blue Jar
