The sky was gray, and the air was frigid and damp. A bluejay landed on my trellis. Was he coaxing me to pour some warm water into his frozen birdbath? It was quiet outside, and I could hear a crow cawing from somewhere in the distance. Like the cry of a wounded soldier, his voice pealed across the winter sky.

Little shards of sleet fell upon the frozen ground. A mockingbird greeted me at my back door. Chittering chinks of ice filled the sky.

The sun is peeking from behind the clouds, casting shadows across the icy snow. The light behind–shadows ahead. My world has been paralyzed by ice and cold.
January 18, 2024
Snow and ice are still hard-frozen on the ground. Today, I threw bits of bread and apple slices out, and birds I have never seen before in my backyards are flocking in. They are calling all their friends.
