Flowers that Bloom in My Mississippi October Garden

Hardy Pink Chrysanthemum – Jacki Kellum Garden

Last spring, I planted some tiny starts of a perennial and hardy pink chrysanthemum, and it has thrived like no other plant in my garden. In fact, we suffered several days of nearly zero degree weather, sleet, and a deep freeze this past January, and my mums remained green throughout that weather. The above photo was taken on October 3, 2023.

Hardy Chrysanthemums -Great Flowering Plants that Will Survive Tough Winters

Today, it is October 3, 2024, and my garden is awash with dots of chrysanthemum buds. They should bloom again any day.

Heirloom Heavenly Blue Morning Glory Blooms in Late October – Jacki Kellum Garden

Most people have wild, volunteer morning glories with a smaller flower than this, and if you have that vine, you probably have ivyleaf morning glory vines.

Some people consider morning glory to be a noxious weed. This is an heirloom variety of that plant. It has larger blooms. My grandmother grew this vine during the 1950s, and I plant it intentionally. This variety is named Heavenly Blue, but it is not the Heavenly Blue that you find in most seed racks. I order this heirloom seed from Burpee.
