Little Chick Picture Book Character Illustration Studies by Jacki Kellum

I am in the process of rewriting a picture book manuscript that I started a couple of years ago, and in doing so, i am re-thinking how I illustrated some of the characters for the older manuscript, Waking Up the Sun.

Waking Up the Sun tells a story about how a farm is impacted the morning that the sun does not rise.

Because the sun did not rise, the Cow was not milked, and the Chicks were not fed.

Initially, I illustrated the chicks in a very simplistic way. In the first illustration, the line between the Chicks and their basket is blurred. I have decided to redo that illustration, making both the mother and her Chicks more realistic.

For a while, I have realized that I needed to add more detail to some of my illustrations, and my hesitancy to do so has impeded my progress. Someone said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. that quote is often erroneously attributed to Einstein, but that is fodder for another post.

Today, I am also making some other changes to my initial manuscript for Waking Up the Sun. In the new story, Little Chick will be the hero and not the Rooster, who is slacking.
