Good Morning Starshine – Jacki Kellum Acrylic Painting of a Sunflower
Finally, after years of limiting my painting to watercolor only, I have finally begun painting in my old style again.
I began my formal study of painting about 50 years ago, and my painting instructor was an abstract expressionist. Thus, my first paintings were in oil, and they were very abstract. During those years, my paintings were loose and highly expressive.

Several years ago, I realized that that I wanted to paint a bit more realistically, and while those paintings were in no way highly realistic, they were not abstract.
About 5 years ago, I realized that I wanted to illustrate my own picture books, and I shifted to watercolor for that. Watercolor didn’t like the free, expressive painting style in which I had been trained, but for the past 5 years, I forced myself to only paint in watercolor.

But this week, I have begun painting in my old style again. It feels good allowing myself to feel free again. This morning I woke up singing an old song, “Good Morning, Starshine. The earth says hello. You twinkle above me. I twinkle below.”
