Boxley Valley in the Ozarks Mountains – Ozarks Barn in Boxley Valley – Jacki Kellum Watercolor

About a month ago, I drove from my new home in Harrison, Arkansas, down through Ponca, Arkansas, across the Buffalo River and toward Hawk’s Bill Crag at Whitaker Point. While I never found Hawk’s Bill Crag that day, I did discover Boxley Valley along the way.

The area around Ponca and Boxley Valley is breathtakingly gorgeous, and it is packed with well-known points of interest that are situated within a couple of square miles. I want to return and photograph the covered bridge at Ponca and the old, abandoned church there, too.

Elk roam Boxley Valley, but I didn’t time my first trip there correctly. I have been told that you must be in Boxley Valley very, very early to see the elk, and I didn’t arrive until mid-morning. I’ll get there earlier next time.

But while I was there, I did see the very famous Boxley Valley Baptist Church, and across the highway from that church, I spotted a barn that was perfectly framed by a grand, old oak tree. I photographed the barn while I was there, and I immediately came home and painted it.

I have never before been a barn painter. My work is typically more bold and colorful, but I have only lived in the Ozarks a few months, and everywhere I look, I see a painting. I feel compelled to paint the Ozarks that I am experiencing every day.
